I know I personally struggle with dry skin and hair issues when the seasons change. It’s like, as soon as fall rolls around, everything from my head to my toes gets extra dry and dull! Since seasonal changes are bound to happen, its a good idea to change up your routine if you need to focus a bit more on moisturizing and hydrating. Our hair can get dry because our scalp doesn’t make enough oil to moisturize our hair, or moisture is escaping somehow. To achieve healthier hair during dryer seasons, here are some healthy tips that can help you out!
Use a Deep Conditioning Mask 1 to 2 times a Week
I’m currently in love with Briogeo’s “Don’t Despair, Repair!” deep conditioning mask, which helps leave my hair feeling extra moisturized the next morning. You lather the creamy mask from the roots to the ends and leave it in for 10 minutes (or longer) before rinsing. While you let the mask do its work, take some time to exfoliate your body with a nice salt or sugar scrub. Check out my current favorite here. I love this mask because it smells good, it feels luxurious, and my hair feels noticeably softer after each use. It’s about 30 bucks on Amazon.
Rinse with Cooler Water
I get it. When its cold outside, a nice hot shower feels amazing. However, hot water can do some major damage to your hair, especially when the seasons change. Rinsing your shampoo and conditioner with cooler water will seal the cuticle and lock in more moisture, keeping your hair smoother and softer.
Don’t Over-wash your Hair
Over-washing or using a harsh shampoo strips away your hair’s natural oils. Try every other 2-3x/week instead of every day.
Consider a Leave-in Conditioner
Leave-in conditioners may sound extra, but its one of the easiest ways you can shield your hair from heat-styling, brushing, twirling, tying, and other factors that may cause dryness and damage. Right now I’m using the Kristin Ess Weightless Shine Leave-in Conditioner, available at Target. Since my hair is fine, I like that this product isn’t too heavy and helps give my hair a little shine while detangling my hair.
Drink Plenty of H20 and Take Fish Oil Supplements
Fish oil helps nourish the skin, including the scalp, which could indirectly benefit the health of your hair. And a study published in the “Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology” in 2015 reported that a supplement containing omega-3 fatty acids might help with hair thinning. Women that took the supplement for 6 months lost less hair, and their hair also grew in thicker, growing thicker individual strands of hair, as well as growing more hair overall.
Need Extra Help? Get a Professional Deep Conditioning Treatment
Most hair salons offer a deep conditioning treatment for around 30 bucks (give or take) as an add-on service. These treatments help repair, nourish, moisturize, and restore hair in just one trip to the salon.
