ASHLEY HOSMER on Houseplants & Shelfies
Ashley Hosmer is an interior and lifestyle blogger in LA and she’s got the coolest nails and cutest pup in town. Not only is her apartment #homegoals, but there’s something about her that makes me feel like we’re already friends. She’s got a gift for decorating her home in a meaningful way and she’s an expert treasure-hunter for cool pieces on Etsy and at local shops. Need tips on how to style a shelf or which houseplants to purchase? Keep reading for my interview with this blogger babe.
1. What inspired you to launch your interior and lifestyle site, ashleyhosmer.com?
I turned my Instagram into an interior account without really thinking about it. I just started posting more pictures of our home and my husband started calling our home my personal showroom. Then coworkers, friends and family members started telling me I should start a blog. After a while it didn’t sound like a crazy idea anymore, so I signed up for Squarespace and started blogging. Now the hardest part is actually writing, I was so good in the beginning but now I’m averaging one blog post a month!
2. How would you describe your style and where you do you draw inspiration from?
I’d say my style is California modern with a focus on comfort. I get a ton of inspiration from accounts I follow on Instagram, I am constantly saving photos to different boards, and from traveling. When we travel I spend days researching where to stay. The Airbnb’s inspire me and the landscape of where we visit.
3. I noticed that you have a lot of greenery in you home– what house plants do you recommend and where did you get your planters and pots from?
The light in our home is amazing and my love of plants really started when we moved into our current apartment. My favorite plants are pothos (they are so easy to care for, minimal light and water when the soil is dry) and monstera. Snake plants and zz’s are great for beginners too but a satin pothos is my favorite. A lot of my pots are from Venice Plants, my favorite nursery in LA, they are simple, either plain black, white, or terracotta. But as my collection of plants has grown, I’ve started seeking out more unique pots and planters from ceramists. I have a few from Mary Carroll and then I collect them as I find them, from plant shops like Folia Collective in Eagle Rock and Solabee’s in Portland to craft fairs and even on instagram by discovering new ceramicists.
4. I’m in love with your mid-century style bookshelf. Can you share a few tips on how to style a shelf?
I decorate with items I love. Ceramics, art and plants are my go-to decorating items. I layer them and play around with different heights to add dimension. I cluster crystals together next to a trailing string of hearts next to a framed picture and to me it just works. But I play around, I take pictures then look at them, see what doesn’t work and move things around again.
5. What pieces in your home are most meaningful to you? What do you look for when choosing an accent piece?
I’ve learned to slow down when styling and decorating. I used to feel a rush to finish but I found that when I did that, I’d inevitably begin replacing items that I didn’t love. So now I slow down and pick pieces with a purpose. I try to find unique pieces or pieces that are meaningful to my husband and I. In our dining room we have a gallery wall that I’ll always love. In the center is a giant poster of different kinds of pasta, be brought this home from our trip to Florence. Next to that is a framed picture from our first date and a pizza box lid from our one year anniversary. Other things I love are the weaving over our bed. I commissioned this as a custom piece from Sunwoven soon after we moved in and it has become the focal point of our bedroom.
6. What are 3 beauty products that you can’t live without?
My holy grail nighttime serum is Farmacy Honeymoon Glow. I love any product with alpha hydroxy acids and this one is excellent, it tingles in the best way and makes my skin smoother. I pair this with the OLEHENRIKSEN Goodnight Glow moisturizer and it’s the best combo I have found for my oily/combination skin. And lastly, the Origins Rose Clay Mask, I throw this one any time my skin is breaking out and it really clears it up and makes it look glowy. All these products I’ve purchased multiple times but wow picking just three was so hard!
