How to Have Healthy Hair – Tips with Master Stylist Reagan Kaalekahi
When you move to a new city, it sometimes takes months or years to find a hair stylist you truly trust and are excited to go back to. So when I came in for an appointment with Reagan Kaalekahi, I knew my search had ended. Reagan is a Master Stylist at Belle Sirène, a glamorous and chic hair salon in La Jolla, just a short walk away from the beach. On top of having a gift for coloring and styling hair, Reagan also exudes passion and excitement for his work. I instantly knew I had to interview him on hair care for Glean & Glow! Need helpful hair care tips and recommendations on products? Keep reading for my interview with this surfer/dad/hair care expert.
First, tell us about how you got into hair styling
I got into hair by getting gifted a pair of clippers for Christmas. I was 14 years old and from that point I began cutting my own hair to start, and eventually moved onto my brothers and their friends. My salon space was my garage.
What self-care practices help create balance in your life?
In my industry our primary focus is the client, all of our energy and attention goes to them and nowhere else. Therefore it’s extremely important to find balance. When I’m not behind the chair, it’s important for me to spend quality time with my family, explore San Diego, discover other beaches, hike, and most of all, surf!
Can you share tips on how to get healthy hair?
One // Moisturize your hair 1 time a week or 2 times a month. If your hair has been color processed multiple times 1 time a week would be very helpful for hair health.
Two // Use a great shampoo and conditioner that doesn’t cause build up, which dulls your color and weighs your hair down.
Three // Get frequent haircuts even if you are trying to grow it. Schedule them out every 6, 8 or 10 weeks.
Four // Get a scalp exfoliating scrub. Healthy hair is a direct result to a healthy lifestyle and a clean scalp.
Five // Air dry your hair. If your hair isn’t too curly and will allow for it, air drying is great to getting your hair dry without using too much heat, especially for those of you who shower 4-5 times a week.
