ROOTANICALS: Plant-Powered Skincare
I feel like we’re in this golden age of skincare. It’s hard to keep track of all the exciting new beauty brands and product launches these days, especially in the clean beauty space!
When there are seemingly endless options and only one face to work with, how do you choose what to try next? To help narrow down my choices, I make sure to research the brand’s values to make sure it’s aligned with mine.
Today I review ROOTANICALS, a new botanical skincare brand that embodies all the values I look for in a skincare brand:
- Sustainably-sourced ingredients
- Certified organic
- Cruelty-free
- Free of artificial fillers and synthetics
- Free of parabens, phthalates, + formaldehyde
- Eco-friendly glass packaging
Besides having values that are important to me, I love that ROOTANICALS is plant-powered and made in-house in small batches. When I know that something I use is handmade, I tend to appreciate it more.
Founder Melina, a mom of two, launched Rootanicals after struggling with hormonal issues and infertility with her second baby. Her entire line uses hormone-friendly, 100% plant-based ingredients that are potent and nourishing for the skin. Her products don’t contain water – instead, she uses organic botanical waters instead which have a higher concentration of nutrients.
Three Products I’m Using
1. NOURISHING EYE REPAIR BUTTER ($48)
First impressions // loved the beautiful glass packaging and golden color of the eye butter! It feels rich and buttery but non-greasy, it makes my dry eye area feel nourished and well-moisturized. Tip: I love using extra product on my lips – it feels like a balm!
- Blueberries – Rich in antioxidants and vitamins A + C to repair damaged skin tissue, brighten skin, and protect skin from sun damage
- Matcha – Vitamin K and caffeine promote blood circulation and help fade dark under-eye circles
- Mango Butter – Saturated fatty acids and phytonutrients deeply moisturize dry skin
- Squalene Oil – Derived from olives and packed with essential fatty acids, squalane mimics your skin’s natural oils and deeply hydrates dry skin.
- Coenzyme Q10 – This antioxidant helps repair sun-induced skin damage
2. REGENERATING AHA MICELLAR WATER ($36)
First Impressions // My favorite toner (I love lactic acid)! Love the large glass bottle and spray pump. It effectively removes makeup and cleanses my skin and the lactic acid dissolves dead skin cells, brightens skin, and boost hydration. It’s also great for acne-prone skin. This toner is non-stripping and leaves my skin feeling refreshed after. Tip: Only use 1x a day.
- 3.5% lactic acid (alpha-hydroxy acid) – Provides gentle exfoliation and boosts cell renewal, brightens, smoothes, evens skin.
- Green Tea – packed with vitamins and antioxidants to reduce skin damage caused from UV rays
- Rose – Powerful antioxidants and vitamin A and C help strengthen skin cells and regenerate skin tissues.
- Rosehip – Rich in vitamin C and helps keep skin firm, prevents premature signs of aging, brightens
3. EXFOLIATING GREEN CLAY CLEANSER ($44)
First Impressions // I admit I was slightly confused about how to use this at first. It’s recommended that you use equal parts powder and water – I was bad at eyeballing this and ended up with runny cleanser and a mess all over my sink. I recommend mixing the parts in a bowl to keep it clean and using a spoon to measure. Although it’s a clay cleanser, I treat it more like a 5 minute gentle exfoliating mask. Tip: Only use 1x a week (max) or as needed.
- WHITE WILLOW BARK (BHA) – As a natural source of salicylic acid (BHA), it provides gentle exfoliation and boosts cell renewal for radiant skin.
- SANDALWOOD – Fights acne-causing bacteria and reduces inflammation and swelling in the skin.
- NEEM – Helps clear acne, scars, pigmentation, whiteheads, and blackheads.
- MARSHMALLOW ROOT – anti-inflammatory properties it soothes skin irritations like acne or puffiness. Helps repair the skin barrier.
