What’s a BBL Treatment Do?
When I heard that the BBL photofacial was “the Mercedes-Benz of IPLs,” I was immediately sold. I’ve had a couple of IPLs (intense pulsed light therapy) in the past and loved how it evened out my skin. The BBL is a powerful treatment that erases reds and browns in your skin, treats signs of aging/sun damage, and leaves your complexion looking clear, smooth, and luminous.
How does it work?
During a BBL photofacial, pulses of light are emitted and absorbed by the melanin (pigment) and red blood cells in the skin, generating heat. This heat emulates a superficial injury and activates the skin’s natural healing processes.
As your skin attempts to repair itself, it sheds its dull, damaged outer layer and forms supple, vibrant new skin. The light emitted during the single pass of IPL therapy breaks down the dark pigment inside age spots, freckles, creating a more even skin coloration. A series of treatments is recommended for optimal results.
My Skin Before the BBL
My main concerns were sun spots under my eyes, hyperpigmentation, redness, and dull looking skin. I love my skin maintenance routine, but I’ve been noticing more signs of aging and wanted something that would give me dramatic results. Was the BBL worth it? I wanted to find out so I made an appointment at Revive Med Spa in San Diego (Carmel Valley location).
The Experience
The treatment was 30 minutes long and wasn’t too painful. From a scale of 1-10, the pain level was a 3. My eyes were covered with safety glasses and I felt a “rubber band snap” sensation as the light was absorbed by the targeted areas. Immediately after the treatment I saw some redness, which was normal. It went away after a few hours.
For the next few days, I noticed darkening of the treated areas followed by fading and flaking. The darkened areas were most noticeable days 2-4.
After the BBL Treatment
Once the darkened spots faded around day 5 and 6, I started noticing a huge difference in my complexion. My skin looked noticeable more clear, radiant, youthful, even, and fresh. I was blown away!! Friends gave me compliments on my skin and asked what I was doing.
Even with just 1 treatment, I’m SO impressed with the results. I feel like my skin looks 5 years younger. I was told that a series of 3-4 is best, but since it’s quite pricey (~$500/ 1 treatment), I’m holding off. Now, all I wear is a tinted SPF and skin tint for light coverage – no need for foundation.
Tip: Some med spas offer deals for new patients! I was able to get 50% off my first treatment.
