FRESHNESS IN BEAUTY CARE
I recently attended a Masterclass at my local Credo with NUORI founder, Jasmi Bonnén, where I learned about the importance of freshness in skincare ingredients and the truth about shelf life!
It was an intimate gathering where each guest was welcomed with a glass of sparkling rosé or CBD water (I was like, can I have both?), and seated at a table covered in beautifully packaged NUORI products. In addition to hearing founder Jasmi speak about freshness and skincare, we were all invited to give ourselves a mini-facial as we learned more about the benefits of each product (all made in Denmark!).
Keep reading to find out the surprising facts I learned about shelf life and to check out my interview with Jasmi!
CLASS NOTES: THE TRUTH ABOUT SHELF LIFE
Did you know that most skincare products are formulated to last at least 2.5 years or longer? Long shelf lives are achieved by preservatives and additives; however, they can’t protect against the breakdown of active ingredients over time. What does this mean? Active agents like vitamin C or E start to lose their effectiveness in a just a few months!
Since there aren’t government regulations requiring manufacturers to print expiration dates on the labels of skin and cosmetic products, many consumers don’t realize that the beneficial properties may be lost.
NUORI’S APPROACH: FRESHNESS-POWERED BEAUTY
NUORI products are 100% free from artificial preservatives and other synthetic additives normally used to prolong shelf life. Everything is freshly blended in small batches every 10 to 12 weeks at their production facilities in Denmark, packaged and promptly delivered to their retail partners across the world. This ensures that active ingredients are not compromised by time-related breakdown!
KEY TAKEAWAY
Whether or not you use fresh skincare products, I think its important that we all start paying more attention to shelf life and use products formulated with clean, non-toxic ingredients.
3 QUESTIONS WITH JASMI
1. We both struggled with adult acne and hormonal breakouts. Do you have any go-to products or tips on what has helped treat or prevent those skin issues?
I have found that adding a strong probiotic and B-vitamin complex to my diet has helped reduce breakouts. Having a regular sleep and exercise pattern can reduce overall stress levels and makes breakouts less prevalent. Sticking to a rigorous, yet gentle skincare routine is also very beneficial. Don’t overdose on spot treatments, astringents, and harsh peels that strip skin of moisture and weaken the barrier function. Rather, use a gentle cleanser every night followed by a hydrating toner. Then apply a balancing all-natural facial oil. (Yes, oil!). A high quality balancing facial oil (like NUORI’s Perfecting Facial Oil) will help the skin balance out its own sebum production and repair the barrier function. During the day use a lightweight moisturiser and a mineral SPF. Twice a week apply either a deep-cleansing, pore reducing mask (if you have oily skin and visible pores), or a gentle exfoliator. And stick to the same routine for at least for 3 months to see results. If you worry about scarring from breakouts, consider using a retinoid (vitamin A) cream.
However, people who suffer from severe hormonal and/or cystic acne usually need more than just topical treatments and should therefore consult a dermatologist. I have seen great results with hormone-blocking medications like Spironolactone, and of course as a last result, there is Accutane.
2. What are your favorite beauty products?
I am simply addicted to NUORI’s Supreme Moisture Mask. It is an intensive hydrating treatment that can be worn as a sleep mask or on long-haul flights, which I am currently on constantly! What I love about this mask is that it is non-sticky and goes on transparent.
In my makeup bag I always carry Kjaer Weis Glow highlighter in Radiance. It’s the most natural looking yet luxurious highlighter for cheeks, and brow bones.
3. As a boss-babe running a start-up beauty brand and a mother to two sons, what self-care practices are important for you?
Yoga classes, the occasional glass of red wine, and date nights once a week with my husband.
Special thanks to Jasmi and NUORI for putting on a wonderful event and creating a beautiful brand. Check them out on Instagram @nuoriskincare.
