Now that the holidays are over, let’s talk about diet. Christmas cookies, alcohol, and late night treats were fun, but now I’m ready to hit the re-set button and focus on foods that improve my mood and bring health to my body and skin. You feel me?
Certain inflammatory foods can affect your mood, mental state, sleep, health, and can trigger flare-ups in our skin. Research also shows that other foods can help fight inflammation and balance the immune system, says Mayo Clinic. So what’s the deal with inflammation and what does food have to do with it? Grab a matcha green tea and keep reading to find out!
What is inflammation?
Not all inflammation is bad! Inflammation is the body’s normal response to outside threats like stress, infection, or toxic chemicals. When our immune system senses one of these threats, it activates proteins meant to protect cells and tissues. But if inflammation morphs into a lingering state and remains active after the threat is gone, chronic inflammation can develop. Unchecked, the immune system prompts white blood cells to attack nearby healthy tissues and organs, which can cause more serious health issues long-term, says Harvard Health.
How does food play a role?
Bacteria in our gut release chemicals that may activate or suppress inflammation. This means that the one of the most powerful ways to combat inflammation is with FOOD, according to science!
What foods cause inflammation?
- refined carbohydrates: cereal, pasta, white bread, rice, and pastries
- sugar and high-fructose corn syrup: candy, soda, desserts, and certain cereals
- fried foods like french fries
- red meat (burgers, steaks)
- processed meat (bacon, hot dogs, sausage)
- artificial trans fats: margarine, partially hydrogenated oils, shortening
What foods fight inflammation?
- green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale
- omega-3 fatty foods like salmon, tuna, walnuts, pecans, soy
- antioxidant rich foods like tomatoes, berries, beets, avocados, ginger, turmeric, green tea
- extra virgin olive oil
